Mathemania

What is Mathemania?

Mathemania is an annual puzzle contest held in Myanmar and is open to public. It consists of puzzles that assess stdents’ visual/spatial, counting, arithmatic, pattern finding and logical/reasoning skills. Mathemania is organized by Horizon Math Department and gained popularity since it was initiated in 2006. Students, parents, educators and media have shown great enthusiasm and support for the event.

Dear Mathemania 2016 participants,

As the Mathemania team, we take the pride to organize the eighth of the legendary Mathemania Puzzle Contest. Each year our enthusiasm and excitement grows along with Mathemania. We wish to give the clear picture of what Mathemania is all about, thus the Horizon math, IT and marketing departments worked together to help you understand it better.

Since the humble beginning in 2005 with a small number of participants, Mathemania has grown to be one of the biggest and most prestigious math-oriented competitions in Myanmar. We now host over a thousand participants at 5 different centers in five different cities: Yangon, Mandalay, Taunggyi, and Muse.

Levels

There are three levels in Mathemania 2016 Contest according to the ages of participants. Level details are below.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS CONTENT IS TO BOOST ENTHUSIASM TOWARD MATH AND STRENGTHEN THE STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

Question Type

The questions in Mathemania are grouped in 5 categories:

  • Arithmetic, where understanding of numeral skills are assessed
  • Visual/ Spatial, where the visual skills are required
  • Counting, where students are required to use a systematic way to count
  • Pattern, where discovery of different level patterns is expected
  • Logical Reasoning, where students use their logical skills to tackle the problems.

Rules and Regulations

General Information

  • Mathemania is an annual contest consisting of different kinds of puzzles for different levels organized by Horizon International Schools (HISM) in Yangon, Mandalay, Taunggyi, Sagaing and Lashio. The purpose of this contest is to boost the enthusiasm towards Math and strengthen the critical thinking skills of students.
  • Who can participate?
    Anyone from Primary, Secondary, and High school level. The levels are as follows:

  • The Contest consists of 25 multiple choice puzzles. A basic knowledge of math skills, like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication are required.
  • Primary, Secondary, and High School Level participants take different levels according to their age. The questions are both in English and Myanmar.
  • The contest will be held on 21st of August, 2016; for all the participants of different levels. Time and Venue of the Contest will be mentioned on the participant’s Identity Card.
  • The contest will be held according to the following schedule. Participants of each Level are requested to come at least 45 minutes before the respective Contest starts.

Application Procedure

  • A contestant must attach two recent photos (taken within the last 3 months) along with the application form. Completed application form to be sent to us before 13th August 2016 4:00 pm. The application forms are available in HISM office and at www.horizon.com.mm The Application forms can be photo copied.
  • Applicants should show NRC card or any other relevant document (to prove the date of birth) on submitting the Application form.
  • Applicants who wish to purchase a booklet costing 500 kyats with sample Mathemania questions can do so from the HISM Office.
  • During August 14th to 21st, participants will receive an Identity Card (ID card) that will give them the right to participate in the contest. This ID card and the NRC card are to be presented during the exam

During the Contest

    • Students should sit in their assigned seats according to the ID card number.
    • No books, calculators, computers, cell-phone, I-Phones or other electronic devices are allowed during the contest. Students are permitted to use only writing tools and erasers.
    • No participant is allowed to walk around, talk to other participants, or share writing tools or erasers during the contest.
    • Any possible technical errors on the question paper, the participant has the right to ask for a new one. Therefore, students are suggested to go through the question paper carefully before starting to solve the puzzles. The teacher in charge will help you to get a new paper.
    • Contestants can clear doubts, if any, with the teachers in charge by raising their hands. Contestants are requested to maintain silence in the exam hall.
    • Contestants will remain in their seats until all the Answer Sheets have been collected, regardless of whether they have finished or not. Question papers can be taken home by the contestants.
    • In a level, if all the participants answer all the questions correctly, the youngest will be considered the winner.
    • The time duration is 1 hour and 30 minutes for each level.

Announcement of Results

Contest results will be announced after  2 days of the contest. Results can be either viewed on our web site (www.horizon.com.mm) or on facebook: Horizon schools. Printed results will be displayed at our schools as well.

Prize distribution after the contest

      • The prize awarding ceremony will be held 1 week after the contest (28th of August 2016 for Yangon. Dates and venues will be announced later for other cities).
      • There will be 3 grand prize winners for each level as given in the table below and the top 20 scorers will receive special prizes.

      • Contestants should solve at least 60 % (12 questions) to be eligible for the Grand Prize.
      • If a contestant solves less than 60% of the questions he/she will be ranked according to the score earned.
      • Prizes will be awarded during the Award Ceremony in September 2014.
      • HISM Math Department holds the right to disqualify any contestant who violates the above-mentioned rules and regulations or any other ethical rules during the exam.
      • To overcome the traffic problem, parking vehicles inside the campus or near the school is not allowed.
      • All participants are requested to read and accept the above rules and regulations before entering the contest.
